African Leadership Centre (ALC) – South Sudan Working Group (SSWG) in partnership with Africans for the Horn of Africa Initiative (Af4HA) are pleased to invite you to an X-Space conversation to discuss possible pathways for statehood in South Sudan that reflect the aspirations of the people.
TITLE: A Discussion on Fostering a Collective Vision for Statehood in South Sudan
DATE: Tuesday, 10 December 2024
TIME: 6:00 pm CAT/7:00 pm EAT
VENUE: X (formerly twitter)
OVERVIEW:
A critical examination of liberal peacebuilding in South Sudan reveals that the top-down approach, though well-intentioned, has fallen short of securing sustainable peace and stability. This shortcoming underscores the need for a recalibration that acknowledges the complexities of South Sudan’s sociopolitical fabric. Such a recalibration is particularly crucial at this moment of another 24-month transitional period extension and as the pursuit of peace, security, democracy, and justice have become a set of competing priorities.
The X space seeks bring together multi-dimensional knowledge(s) and discuss possible pathways for statehood in South Sudan that reflect the aspirations of the people. The discussion will delve into the questions:
What is the predominant vision of statehood among South Sudanese? What alternative pathways to legitimate governance can be pursued to achieve sustainable peace in South Sudan?
Speakers:
Hon. Lona James Elia – Deputy Chair – Political Parties Council
Mr. Wani Michael – Former member – National Constitutional Amendment Committee (NCAC)
Dr. Ayak Achol – Peace Process Support Advisor – Inclusive Peace
